The interesting young woman on today’s cover is Maria Antonia Vicenta Alejandra Ysidora Abad of Hollywood by way of Mexico and her native Spain. Since a girl so hard to forget should not be burdened with a name so hard to remember, she just calls herself Sarita Montiel. Hollywood, where she has just finished her latest picture (he third one there, though she has made many others in Mexico) calls her a Mexican hot tamale. Her new film is “Run of the Arrow”, also starring Rod Steiger and Brian Keith. The 24 years-old Sarita plays a Sioux Indian.
Sarita Montiel
Showed Acting Talent at Age 13
Sarita Montiel
is one of the most versatile actresses on the screen today, having started as
an actress at the age of 13 when she won a country-wide contest in her native
Spain, at the time the government conducted an acting scholarship award of
three years duration.
Married to
Hollywood director Anthony Mann, she makes her third American film appearance
co-starring with Rod Steiger and Brian Keith in “Run of the Arrow”. She plays
an American Indian.
Miss Montiel
graduated with high honors from the Royal Dancing School of Valencia. She
acquired a wide experience in Flamenco singing and graduated with the highest
qualifications from the Conservatorio Nacional de Canto of Madrid.
Her musical
accomplishments also include playing of piano and Spanish guitar.
Sarita has acted
in 38 filme so far. “Locura de amor” (“Love Madness”) was her first. This film
was made in Madrid and won several international awards. Sarita dreamed about
Hollywood even then, and after starring in 25 Spanish pictures and 10 more in
Mexico, her dream came true.
Warner Bros,
brought her to Hollywood in August of 1955 for a co-starring role with Mario
Lanza in “Serenade”. Sarita, however, had already been introduced to American
film audiences through “Vera Cruz”, the first picture in which she spoke
English and which starred Gary Cooper and Burt Lancaster.
Of Moorish
descent, Sarita was born in Granada, Spain. She is the daughter of Isidoro
Abad, a winemaker whose faher was a Moor. Her mother is Castilian.
Althought she

Aabad.
When Sarita was 13, a talent scout for a Spanish studio saw and Heard her singing in a religious procession on the streets of Seville. Her family agreed to a screen test and Sarita started in movies as a star.
